A Winter's Tale
I was looking on the shelves at our local library and I found Winterhouse. It looked like it was a newer book and by an author I was not familiar with, Ben Gutterson. A fun fact, Ben Gutterson is an english teacher who lives on a Navajo reservation in New Mexico. I just finished Winterhouse today and thought that was amazing! I am so glad that I picked it up. I would rate this at a 5 star book and is suitable for kids at the age of 10 and up. I really recommend this book for kids who enjoy a good an engaging, warm-hearted story with a bit of a mystery in it. No wonder it was a finalist for the Edgar and Agatha awards! The illustrations, by Chloe Bristol, are very unique but go along with the story and the theme of the book. I don’t think she has done any other books but her illustrations are very detailed and have their own style.
Winterhouse is the story of a girl named Elizabeth Somer, who gets sent away to the Winterhouse Hotel. She makes friends with the hotel owner, the librarian, and a young inventor named Freddy. As Elizabeth explores Winterhouse she finds hidden puzzles and comes across the mystery of the hotel owner’s sister, Gracella. Elizabeth and Freddy do their best to solve Winterhouses puzzle before it’s too late.
Check out this book, and happy book hunting!
