Stars and Signs of the Universe
I recently read Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly. I really enjoyed reading this book because not only did it look interesting but it just sounded like a nice story. I would rate this novel 5 stars and is appropriate for kids ages of 9 and up. And to top it off, Hello, Universe won the 2017 Children John Newbery Medal. I really suggest this book for young, independent readers. Although there are a lot of characters that go back and forth within the chapters, after a little while it is easy to keep everyone straight. But overall, I loved this novel.
Hello, Universe is about four different characters; Kaori, Virgil, Valencia, and Chet. Kaori is a young Japanese girl that is a gifted physic and has weekly meetings with Virgil. Virgil is always in a full and busy house with his grandmother, parents, and two brother and is not sure where he belongs. His parents usually call Virgil “Turtle” as he is quite shy and does not speak up often. He feels the need to make friends with Valencia but just can’t seem to. Valencia is deaf and always has run-ins with Chet Bullens, the town bully. Chet, of course, has no friends and is always making fun of people, especially since he didn’t make the basketball team last year. One day, Virgil is on his way back from Kaori’s and gets stopped by Chet in the neighborly woods. Chet ends up getting Virgil stuck at the bottom of an unused well with his guinea pig, Gulliver. As this story takes unexpected turns, everyone makes new friends, learns new things, and maybe, just maybe, saves someone out of a well with a jump rope. Help Virgil and is friends in this amazing book, Hello, Universe.
Happy Reading!
