A Stroll Down Memory Lane

One of my reading goals for the summer is to read all the Mark Twain nominee books. The nominated book I just finished was Walking with Miss Millie. I was actually surprised at how good this book was because the first, maybe, 5 chapters were really boring and not very interesting. But don’t worry, once you get in the book, it is really good. Trust me. I really suggest this book to kids who like a good family story. Especially novels include lots of family drama. Also, the brother of the main character is deaf so if you like those kinds of aspects then I think you will really like it. I am not that big of a fan of these kind of books but this one just hooked me once I got past the first few chapters. It was a really easy read and I think the story unraveled nicely. Just a heads up, this book is kind of sad, so if you are one of those kids who tend to cry while reading then be sure to have the tissues handy. You’ll need it! I give this book a 4 of 5 and recommend it for kids 11 and up. Even though it was a really good book, I wish there was more, because in the beginning they just say that the Dad of the family left, and that was that. There was really no backstory. Overall, it was a great read.

Walking with Miss Millie was about a girl named Alice and her family who move to a small, run-down town called Rainbow, Georgia. Alice and her family move in with her grandmother who happens to have a terrible memory. Alice is not thrilled about this because she has to leave her friends, school, and cozy house and move to a hot, sticky, town and live in an old shack. When Alice gets a job walking the neighbor, Miss Millie’s, dog Clarence, she finds that Clarence doesn’t want anyone but Miss Millie to walk him. So Alice ends up walking Miss Millie, who walks Clarence. At the age of 92 Miss Millie is still up and going. As time goes on, Alice and Miss Millie’s friendship grow stronger. As they tell each other stories about their families, they realize what hardships they have in common and that life-long lasting friendships can happen when least expected. Help Alice survive the heat of Rainbow and maybe make some new friends.

Happy Reading!
