Sweet as Honey!

The book I will be posting this week is one of my all-time favorites. Besides Coyote Sunrise, which I wrote a post for earlier this summer, Hour of the Bees was one of my favorite reads this year. Hour of the Bees is written by Lindsay Eager who also wrote The Bigfoot Files and Race to the Bottom of the Sea. I’ll be putting The Bigfoot Files on my book list because who doesn’t want to read a book about Bigfoot? BIG. FOOT. I mean, really? Hour of the Bees is a top-notch, 5 star read and I would say kids, if you are 10 years old, you would be the perfect age for this cactus-hittin read. Speaking of cactus...or cacti?  Either way, check out my recent review of Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus. Moving on. I have seen people reading this one before and thought it would be one of those books that had a family crisis and a sappy story but no… I was proven wrong. So wrong it hit me in the face.  Figuratively, of course. This book was amazing. It had a great story, good suspense; everything that makes a good book a good book. As much as I liked this book, I did feel like the ending went on forever. But, when it did end, everything clicked into place.

Hour of the Bees is about a girl named Carolina who goes to visit a grandfather she has never met. Sadly, her grandfather, Serge, has dementia and the story revolves around her parents having to move him into a nursing home. Carolina lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her mom, dad, 1 year old brother, Lu and her older, sassy step-sister, Alta. Carolina and her family make the long journey to a small, run down house on a sheep farm where Serge is living. Her grandfather is so attached to his home he doesn’t want to leave but the dementia is getting worse and taking care of the ranch is impossible. The family works as hard as they can to organize and pack a lifetime of belongings while Serge shares stories with Carol (a nickname given to Carolina) about a town and a tree. Through the summer, Carol grows closer to her grandfather and begins to understand him like nobody else has before. If you’re a fan of Dr. Suess’s The Lorax, then you will enjoy this story! Hour of the Bees was a “sweet” read and a perfect end to my summer reading list.

Happy Reading!
