What An Explosive Novel!

Before I get into today’s post, I would just like to say Happy Belated Halloween. I hope everyone got lots of candy and had fun trick or treating! Now, back to the post…

Has anyone heard of Alan Gratz? Well, I sure have because today’s review is going to be on the novel, Grenade!!! If you are unfamiliar with Alan Gratz, he has written Refugee, Allies, Code of Honor, Projekt 1065 (that’s not a typo), and many more. Alan is known for his suspenseful historical fiction novels that keep you on the edge of your chair. A few days ago I finished Grenade and was really surprised by it. What is really unique about Alan Gratz’s books is the story switches between characters, giving readers the same plot from different perspectives. In Refugee, the story switched between four characters, but In the end, each story connected in some way. Grenade was an unmistakable 5 star novel and I would recommend to those in grades 5-8. Grenade was a great read and I found could not put down. The book was extremely well-written and the suspense was thrilling; the story filled with loads of action and combat. It is no wonder this book was a 2019 Audie Award Finalist and won the 2018 Freeman Book Award. I do have to warn the readers that there is some violence. This book takes place in World War ll when the Americans take over a small island on the coast of Japan. There is mention blood, people getting shot and killed, and war combat. It's not graphic, but this is just a heads up if you have a hard time reading about violence or war.

Grenade is set in Okinawa, a teeny, tiny island off the coast of Japan. The Japanese are in the midst of World War ll and the Americans are hot on their heels. Hideki, a teenage boy is left to fight for his island in the Blood and Iron Student Corps. He is given two grenades, one to kill an American soldier and one to kill himself. Ray, an American teenager, is drafted into the army and is stationed at Okinawa. Hideki is struggling to survive and is faced with the wrath of the horrible Japenese that have taken over the island. Hideki must find his sister and a way out. Ray isn’t sure what’s going to happen and is just trying to survive. As both boy’s path cross each other they are asking themselves, will I survive? Help Hideki and Ray find safety and survive the battle across Okinawa.

Happy Reading!
