This week’s review is on the mustache filled, Ohio Children’s Book Award Winning, based on a true story novel, Mustaches for Maddie. I am kicking the year off with this book review because I think we can all use a much needed fresh start. As I mentioned before, Mustaches for Maddie is based on a true story but more specifically on the authors’ daughter, Maddie. When Maddie was in elementary school, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. And if that wasn’t bad enough, she also struggled with bullying. The authors’ and Maddie’s loving parents, Chad Morris and Shelly Brown, capture what it was like for Maddie in this remarkably touching realistic fiction novel. Overall, this book made me feel really grateful. It made me think of how easy my life is and how other people might be hurt or injured and how they have to suffer through everything that comes with it. From the very first chapter of this novel, I knew it was going to be a 5 star read. The writing is so smooth and surprisingly comical. The main character, Maddie, was hilarious and continued to make jokes throughout the whole book despite her situation. I would suggest this novel to any kids between ages 9 and 12. I absolutely loved this book. Everything about it was spectacular and you really get a good viewpoint of what it is like for kids that have to go through the pain and suffering of an awful diagnosis.
Mustaches for Maddie was a touching story focusing on a young girl named Maddie. Maddie is your average elementary schooler. She loves potatoes, letting her imagination run wild, and fake mustaches. She always keeps a few on hand in her pocket. Whether it is a red swirly mustache, fuzzy blue goatee, or a hot pink Fu Manchu, she loves them all. Whenever Maddie’s hands and arms start bending at weird angles and her vision starts to get blurry she wonders what could possibly be wrong. Her mom takes her to the hospital for an MRI and doctors diagnose Maddie with a brain tumor. Even worse, the school play is just weeks away and she won’t be able to play Julliette with a mustache on! Mustaches for Maddie takes you through the journey of how Maddie gets through bullying and a brain tumor. Check this amazing book out at your local library and show Maddie some love.
Happy Reading!
