The Gifts Just Keep on Giving

Welcome Sensible Hound readers to the first ever Sunday Movie Matinee! The classic movie this month is the 1940 film The Shop Around the Corner. This movie is part Christmas miracle, part romantic mystery, and 100% comedy. I suggest this movie for anyone who likes to curl up on the couch with a cup of hot tea. This being said, I rate this movie at 4.5 stars. I did feel like there was a bit of a slow start in the beginning and it was hard to understand some of the words. I’m not sure if it’s because it was made in 1940 and the audio was fuzzy or if it was the different words and phrases that they used back then. If you are 11 or 12 year old, you could easily watch this amazing film. For younger kids, this movie may be a bit boring but overall it was really sweet and a pleasure to watch. There is a 1998 remake called You’ve Got Mail that is rated PG but really should be rated PG-13. There was a lot of language and wasn’t as good as the original (according to my mom). So, stick with the classic, Shop Around the Corner.

In The Shop Around the Corner, Alfred Kralik (James Stewart) and Klara Novak (Margret Sullavan) work at a general store, Mustuscheck and Company, in Budapest, Hungary. From the first time they meet they despise each other. They are constantly disagreeing and bickering over everything. But little do they know that they are secret pen pals. These two pen pals plan to meet at a local cafe but when Klara sees Mr. Krolik, she thinks it's a joke, not the pen pal she was looking for. After the company owner, Mr. Mustuscheck, experiences a personal catastrophe, the business employees find themselves in distress. Will Mr. Mustuscheck be okay? Will Mr. Krolik and Klara ever meet? Well, I’ll let you find out on your own. Give it up for the 1940 classic, The Shop Around the Corner!

Enjoy the Show,

Evelyn Harrier
