New Kids on the Block!

This weekend's post is going to be on the new graphic novel, New Kid, by Jerry Craft. This is the first ever graphic novel I am reviewing on my blog and I am super excited! As excited as I am about this post, I’m not so excited about the book. I felt that New Kid was kind of a let down. Don’t get me wrong, the storyline and the plot were amazing, it was just the illustrations that disappointed me. Whenever I read a comic book I expect high quality illustrations, and while the illustrations in New Kid were entertaining, I didn’t find them as good as I wanted them to be. I appreciate the amount of work that goes into these comics and the different styles of illustrators but some of the faces and scenes were weirdly shaped and confusing to look at. Jerry Craft is an amazing artist, but I felt that this was not some of his best work. If you are wondering who Jerry Craft is, he is an author and illustrator. He includes a lot of Afrian American culture and diversity into his books. His most famous comics have been Mama’s Boyz, which is also a well-known african american comic strip. Besides the fact that it looked like some of the illustrations were rushed, everything else was perfect. The storyline was intriguing and everything came together really nicely in the end. With this being said I would rate this graphic novel at 4.2 stars and say any kid from the age 8-13 could read it. Still, I felt that it was a bit of a let down but I would still encourage you to read it if you ever get a chance. If you are a fan of books with a lot of diversity, then I think you should definitely check this one out!

New Kid is about a young seventh grader named Jordan Banks. As with many middle grade plot lines, Jordan finds himself starting a new school in a completely different part of town. But, this is no ordinary school. This is a very classy, luxurious, and upscale school called the Riverdale Academy Dayschool. (Or also known as RAD to the students and staff.) This school is filled with white boys and girls and hardly any students of color like himself. His homeroom teacher mistakes him for different people and the staff are always blaming him for things that aren't his fault. So, instead of going to the art school of his dreams Jordan is stuck at RAD and forced to make new friends, stay clear of the older students, and most important, survive the soccer team. Help Jordan through the journey of New Kid!

Happy reading,

Evelyn Harrier
