The March Returns!

Last Sunday I reviewed the 1994 movie Little Women. Today’s post is going to be on the 2019 remake of Little Women. Personally, I would say that this Little Women was much better than the original. I felt that the casting was better and they did a better job with expressing who the characters were. I felt that the costuming was also fit for the time setting in the movie more than the original. However, this was the kind of movie where you have to pay attention. Unlike the original, this movie flip-flops around from perspectives. If you know the story of Little Women, then you know that throughout the movie Joe is writing a novel about her life. In the new remake, it is the journey and struggles that Joe is going through to write and publish this novel. But, throughout the stages of getting her book publicized there are flashbacks that tell the story of Little Women. If you are the kind of person who falls asleep during movies then I would advise you not to with this one because it is very easy to get lost. I would rate this movie at 4.5 stars because there was just a feeling about it and certain things that made it not the best movie (but not the worst!). Anyway, if you are the age 10 or up you could watch this movie. The content is appropriate as there is only a little bit of drama and romance. One of the March sisters does get sick with the scarlet fever, but nothing gross or medical is shown. I really hope you will be able to watch this movie as it is so entertaining and is such a great story!

The cast in this movie was amazing and also... questionable. The oldest sister Meg was played by Emma Watson. I don’t think this was the best choice. Throughout the movie, her english accent came out several times and I feel like they could have chosen someone who fit the character more. Joe, the second oldest daughter, played by Saorise Ronan, was a fantastic choice. Her acting of the proud-to-be-female character was spot-on and really showed what Joe fought for. Beth, played by Eliza Scanlen, was a perfect touch. Her soft personality fit Beth’s musical self. Finally, Amy, played by Florence Pugh, is the firecracker like Amy is supposed to be. She is always excited and has this very petite and pretty style about her. Timothee Chalamet, the actor playing Laurie, also seemed not the best choice. He looked nothing like the original and didn’t have the same feel. But overall, the acting in this film was amazing and so was the set and costuming. Everything was played out perfectly and all of the characters had their own sense of style. The costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, staged the costume with elegance and fulfilled the time era perfectly. Also, this film won an Academy Award for Best Costume design! I really suggest this movie to any Little Women, Jane Austin, or the late 1800’s, movie fans.

Happy watching,

Evelyn Harrier
