Mysterious Mr. Benedict
I hope all of you are finding books okay. It can be a real struggle in a time like this when all of the libraries are closed! Today I am going to be reviewing The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. I have been wanting to read this book for years, and I finally had the chance. To some, the beginning of this novel might seem slow and boring, and I would agree with them. When you start reading this book, the beginning is slow and there is not much to it. However, once you get a couple chapters in, the excitement starts. Trenon Lee Stewart’s Mysterious Benedict Society is a whimsical novel that contains a humerous, nail-biting, and vengeful plot. I found that The Mysterious Benedict Society was a very simple read. The writing was easy to follow and the plot was straight forward. The personality of the characters really stood out. All the characters are very intelligent but each had their own unique quirks. No one character was the same as the rest. I would rate this book at an absolute 5 stars! At every page there was a new twist and turn that the characters would have to face. The Mysterious Benedict Society has won the Notable Children’s Award and the Booklist Editors’ Choice Award. I would recommend this book to kids ages of 10 and up. Even though I’m older than the intended audience, I still really enjoyed it! It’s simplicity was so sweet and almost magical. The author, Trenton Lee Stewart, definitely brought it to life. And good news! If you enjoy this one, there are 3 more books in the series.
The Mysterious Benedict Society starts with a mysterious ad in the newspaper of a small city named Stonetown. This ad is calling for gifted children who are looking for special opportunities. It is no surprise that the writer of this ad finds what he is looking for. Before these children can find out what their “special opportunities” are, they have to pass a series of tests to see if they qualify. The children that pass the test include four orphans, Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance. Reynie is a natural born leader, Sticky is a genius, Kate is athletic and resourceful, and then there's Constance Constraire. Constance is very, very, very small for her age and always seems to wake up on the wrong side of the bed. She’s always grouchy and sleeps most of the time. These four gifted children are to help Mr. Benedict (the man who placed the ad in the paper) stop an evil man, by the name of Mr. Curtain. He runs an institute for children, but really has a cruel plan up his sleeve. I’ll let you find out if Reynie, Kate, Sticky, and Constance can manage to stop Mr. Curtain!
Happy reading,
