Was it Fate That Brought Us Together?

The book that I am reviewing today is one of the best books I have read so far this year. It might even be my favorite of all time! And that book is, (drumroll please), Moon Over Manifest! You may have not heard of it but you should definitely check it out. It is such a great book with an amazing story. I love historical fiction, and I thought that the author, Clare Vanderpool, took a lot of time and effort to make this novel perfect. If you are familiar with Clare Vanderpool, you can also look at her other book, Navigating Early. This novel even won a Newbery Award! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a bit of a mystery twist. This book was so good, I don’t have enough words to describe how amazing it was! With all of this being said, this novel is a definite 5 stars and recommended for readers 11 and up. I suggest you should check it out if you like a good historical fiction novel that you can read with a cup of tea and about five warm blankets. (Trust me, blankets and a book is one of the best things ever :)

Moon Over Manifest is set in 1955 and is about a young girl named Abilene Tucker. Abilene’s father, Gideon Tucker, has gotten a job working on the railroad tracks up in the northern states. Her father has left her in the capable hands of a nice man named Shady. Shady is a priest, bartender, and all-around handyman in Manifest, Kansas. Abilene is confused and slightly defensive of why her father left her in a place like Manifest. Manifest is a sleepy, dried-up town that looks like it hasn’t had any excitement in 50 years! But, it was her father’s hometown when he was a teenager. She doesn’t know anything about it, but she is hoping she can learn more about her dad just by being there. As the summer goes on, she discovers an old cigar box in Shady’s house. Inside, there are letters, drawings, and keep-sake items of a young man named Ned Gillan and a childish teenager named Jinx. As the summer goes on, friends start to feel more like family and Abilene begins to feel a connection to Ned and Jinx. She wonders who they are and could she possibly have a connection to them?

Happy reading,

Evelyn Harrier
