A Mother's Day Musical

Before I start reviewing today’s Sunday Matinee, I just wanted to take a moment and say Happy Mother’s Day! Thank you mothers for all the hard work you do to support our families! For our first Sunday Matinee of the month, yep, you read that right. This month I will be posting two Sunday Matinees, so be sure to keep an eye out for the second post! Today I will be reviewing the 1965 acclaimed classic, The Sound of Music. This classic contains some of the most well-known actors and actresses in the musical boom of the 50’s and 60’s. This includes Christopher Plumber, Julie Andrews, Eleanor Parker, and Peggy Wood. I think that The Sound of Music is a great film that would be perfect for any family movie night. This movie is completely family friendly with no violence, language, consumerism, and only little mention of drinking and smoking. Of course being a 1960’s classic, there is a tad bit of romance and a couple mildly intense scenes. I absolutely love this movie. The songs are amazing and Julie Andrew (also in The Princess Diaries, Shreck, Mary Poppins) does such a good job and really makes the movie her own. The Sound of Music has won many awards including an Academy Award for Best Picture, Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture, and Julie Andrews took home the Oscar for Best Actress. As you can probably tell, this is a 5 star movie and would be great for any family and kids at any age.

If you are not familiar with The Sound of Music, the movie follows a nun-in-training, Maria (played by Julie Andrews) in Salzburg, Austria in 1938. Maria longs for adventure and can’t help getting herself into trouble. The older, wiser nuns think she is a nusant and is too unlady-like to become a real nun. When Maria gets assigned to be a governess for a retired navy captain, Captain Von Trapp, and his 7 children, things start to get interesting. Maria brings music, joy, and love back into the Von Trapp home. The beginning of World War II puts the family in danger and they have to decide whether to stay in Austria or flee. Based on the real Von Trapp family singers, The Sound of Music, shows us the importance of family AND music in all our lives. Grab your mom and spend a great mother’s day watching this classic film!

Happy watching,

Evelyn Harrier
