Don't Rain on my Parade!
For this month's Sunday Matinee, I will be reviewing the spring classic, Easter Parade! This is one of my all time favorite movies and even though it is a little late for Easter, this is the perfect movie to watch on any lazy spring day. Full of singing, dancing, and amazing costumes, director Charles Walters has made Easter Parade and many other 1950s musicals such as, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Annie Get Your Gun, and The Glass Slipper. Easter Parade includes some of the most famous actors from the golden age of Hollywood. The main characters are played by Fred Astaire and Judy Garland, and some of the not so prominent characters are played by Ann Miller, Peter Lawford, and Jules Mushin. In 1949 Easter Parade won an Academy Award for Best Original Musical. So, in this case and with all of my praise I am going to rate Easter Parade at a full 5 stars and would say if you are ages 10 and up. This film is completely family friendly with only a little bit of 1950s romance. Easter Parade has amazing music and dancing that I’m sure everyone will love. This movie really inspired me to research more and watch more of the amazing films from the late 1950s and I hope it will do the same for you!
Easter Parade follows the career of the famous dancer Don Hews. Don Hews just lost his dancing partner, Nadine, due to a “better opportunity” and is looking for a new one. He comes across a plain girl named Hannah Brown who works as a performer at the local bar. She is no spectacular dancer but she is eager to learn. Don takes her in and makes her his new partner, but soon realizes that Hannah is clumsy and can’t remember her dance steps! One night, as they are rehearsing Don discovers Hannah has a knack for singing. Instead of making her the new Nadine, he let’s Hannah be Hannah and magic happens! With good old-fashioned competition, beautiful costuming, and comedy, this film is one of the best! I hope you are able to watch this movie and happy Sunday!
Happy watching,
Evelyn Harrier
