Make a Wish

Today I will be reviewing the 2016 novel, Wish. I am so excited for this post because one of the main characters (or animals) of this book is… a small beagle puppy! My dog is also a beagle and whenever I saw the cover of this novel, I knew I had to read it. Wish is written by Barbra O'Connor. She is a fantastic children’s author that has written many books including Greetings From Nowhere, Wonderland, and How to Steal a Dog. Barbra O'Connor has a great way of writing her books. What I noticed in Wish was that the text was very simple. The simplicity of the writing is what made this book so good. The main character, Charlie, had a lot of tough things going on throughout her life. I think that there was a lot of great emotion that shaped Charlie’s personality. Wish is set in a small town in North Carolina so through the whole book I felt like I had to read it with a southern accent! However, at some times I felt that this novel was a little too simple and needed more detail or explanation to make the writing come to life. But then other times, it would be great and I felt like I was engulfed in the story. This novel had a lot of ups and downs, reading wise, but I still encourage you to read it. It was such a great, heartfelt story. Also, if you are fans of books like Greetings From Witness Protection, Mustaches for Maddie, or The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise, then this novel is right up your alley. I would rate this book at 4.5 stars and would be great for anyone between the ages of 9 and 12.

Wish is about a young girl named Charlie who has made the same wish, every day, since fourth grade. Her dad is in jail, her older sister doesn’t care that much about her, and her mom hasn’t gotten out of bed in a long time. So, with an unkept and not very kid-friendly home, Charlie is moved to her Aunt and Uncle’s house. They live in a small, dusty, typical southern-town, where according to Charlie’s friend, they eat squirrel sandwiches. Moving from Raleigh to Colby, North Carolina was not easy, as all Charlie wanted was to be with her old friends and not have to put up with country people. Over the course of several weeks, Charlie realizes that maybe Colby is the right place for her and now she doesn’t even want to go near Raleigh anymore. As friends turn into family, Charlie starts to find her place in Colby. However, there is another factor missing. Charlie is still making her wish every single day, and it has not come true! So, she starts to wonder, “Am I wishing for no reason at all?” Find out in the extraordinary novel, Wish!

Happy reading,

Evelyn Harrier
