Greetings from Witness Protection!
Winner of the Brightly Best Children’s Book of 2017, I am happy to review the extraordinary novel, Greetings from Witness Protection by Jake Burt. This was one of the books I had to read for the book club I am in at school. I am so glad that they picked this book because it was absolutely amazing. The way the author developed the characters and made the setting come alive blew my mind. I am also a writer and do enjoy writing short stories, but the way Jake Burt executed Greetings from Witness Protection, was spectacular. This being his first novel is also very impressive. As you have most likely already guessed, this is a 5 star novel. I would recommend this book to kids ages 11 and up. If you enjoy similar books such as Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, Forget me not, and, Saving Marty, then I encourage you to read this novel! The plot line is very interesting and actually encouraged me to research the Witness Protection Program. Greetings from Witness Protection is about a troubled, 12 year old girl named Nicki Demere. Nicki has been in and out of the foster system and can never seem to “stick” with a foster family, as the kids who get adopted say. Nicki’s problem is she is a pickpocket. A very good one. So good in fact that she picks the pocket of a U.S. Marshall during a life changing meeting. Instantly, she knows there is something going on. After a quick chat with the Marshal and his grumpy assistant, Nicki realizes that she could be the key to saving an innocent family’s life. She looks exactly like the mom of the family and before she knows it, she is packing her bags from her group home in New York and moving to a small town in North Carolina. Her job is to maintain a B- average in school, stop hittman and mobsters from taking over their home, and still try to keep the cover of being a normal kid. Can Nicki take care of this family?
