Have Your Ever Ran Away?
Good morning everyone! I am so sorry that I did not post any reviews last week. I got a new laptop and needed to learn how to use it! Today, I will be reviewing the 1967 novel, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. For being a book written in the late sixties, I was surprised at how much it grabbed my attention. The story was very original featuring bold characters and creative settings. I wouldn’t say that this was the best book I’ve ever read, but it did spark my imagination. From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, did win the Newbery Medal, which I feel is a bit of a stretch for this book compared to other Newbery winners I have read. Speaking of awards, I would give From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler at 4.6 stars and rate this for kids ages 8 and up. I do feel that this novel is made for younger kids and not so much teenagers. This book made me realize how terrible modern day grammar can be. The book’s characters have an articulate and pronounced way of speaking and it made me think of how many unnecessary words we use, such as “like” and “um.” This book also shows us what the cost of things were back then. For example, a can of Coca Cola was 27 cents, whereas now it is one whole dollar! The final thing I am going to say about this book before I get into the summary is how much I enjoyed the mysterious twist. I love how the author, E.L. Konigsburg, has created an amazing read that is as good today as it was in 1967.
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is about a young girl named Claudia Kincaid who wants to run away. She convinces Jaime, her 2nd oldest brother, to join her. Together they run off to New York City were they stay at none other than… the Metropolitan Museum of Art! They sleep in a four poster historic bed, bathe in a big fountain by the restaurant, and use an old Egyptian sarcophagus to hide their things. On the third or fourth day of their stay in the museum, they discover a new statue of an angel in the Italian Renaissance section. Researchers and museum curators believe this statue was made by Michelangelo, but are still unsure. Claudia and Jaime set out try to uncover this mystery. They meet many people including the original owner of the statue, Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, and do many different things on their journey in New York to try to solve the mystery of the statute. Will they find out who made the statue? I don’t know, you will just have to read and find out!
Happy reading,
