Life Can Be Sweet

Today I will be reviewing the series, The Candymakers, by Wendy Mass. Wendy Mass is a terrific children’s book author. She has written many wonderful books including A Mango Shaped Space, Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, and Every Soul a Star. Her writing has won her the Sunshine State Young Readers Book Award, the North Carolina Children’s Book Award, and the National Home School Award for The Candymakers! I highly recommend this book to those of you who enjoy The Mysterious Benedict Society and Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. The Candymakers is a playful read with an exciting mystery and strategic plot twist. I highly recommend this book to kids ages 9 and up. I would rate The Candymakers at a full 5 stars. I absolutely love this short but sweet series. There are only two books in this series. The second book is The Candymakers and the Great Chocolate Chase, which is also an amazing novel. They are so enjoyable and give you a bit of a break from harder, more challenging books. I would encourage anyone to read these novels.

The Candymakers is about four ordinary kids who get accepted to compete in the best candy competition in the country hosted by the Confectionery Association. Will they able make something better than than the famous Oozing Crunchorama? Or even Life is Sweet’s famous salt water taffy? Will it be Logan, who comes from a long line of famous candy makers? Or Daisy, a cheery girl who is secretly a spy? Or Miles, a nerdy boy who would rather spend his days in the library than at the park with other kids? Or finally Philip, who unlike Logan, comes from a long line of schemers and cheaters. He is determined to win this competition and prove to his dad that he can win things without having to cheat for it. However, what Philip knows, that the other contestants don’t, is that his father is planning to take over the Life is Sweet factory and destroy it! But that will never happen if Philip can win the competition and claim the prize money. When the four contestants befriend each other, they try to come up with a plan to save the Life is Sweet factory. Will they be able to save it in time? Can Philip make the winning candy? You will have to find out in The Candymakers, by Wendy Mass!

Happy reading,
