A Chilling Read

Today I will be reviewing a genre of books that I usually don’t review. And that is supernatural fiction! I don’t usually read a lot of supernatural books, but this one was amazing! Written by Lauren Oliver, Liesl and Po was an astonishing book that I could not put down. Unlike some supernatural books that tend to be scary, Liesl and Po made it perfect for kids who do not like scary novels (including me). This being said, I would encourage anyone at the age of 10 and up to read this fantastic book. I would also rate Liesl and Po at a full 5 stars. The way that Lauren Oliver wrote Liesl and Po was very interesting. She gave the writing the impression that it was old-fashioned when it was still written in the modern day. I feel like her style finished this novel off perfectly. Liesl and Po was not only supernatural fiction, it was also a mystery. Throughout the entire book, each character was involved in this huge mysterious event, they just didn’t know it. As the novel went on, the characters got closer and closer together with each chapter. Speaking of which, that is the only thing I can complain about this book. Some of the transitions between character point of views was tricky to keep track of. But other than that, this novel was utterly extraordinary.

Liesl and Po is about a girl, of course, named Liesl and a ghost named Po. On the third night after her father died, the ghost, Po, appeared in her bedroom. Just on this same night, the Alchemist’s assistant, Will, walks down the same street to take something very important to the aristocrat, Lady Premiere. Inside the box that Will is carrying is the world’s most powerful magic, made by the Alchemist himself. But Will does not know that. Will makes a pit stop at the local mortician to retrieve some ingredients for the Alchemist. On the table in the mortician’s shop is a box that looks exactly like the one Will is carrying. It is already very late at night and Will finds himself dosing off into a short slumber. When he is awaken by the mortician, he grabs his box and leaves. Or what he thinks is his box… Through many mishaps and evil-doings, Will and Liesl’s stories come together slowly but surely to make a fantastic read. If you want to find out what happens to the magic, Po, and Liesl, read the fantastic novel, Liesl and Po!

Happy reading,

Evelyn Harrier
