A Story of A War

Before I start my review today, I just wanted to wish everybody a happy first day of school! If you have already started I hope everything is working out for you. My first week of virtual school was rough, so if you are having the same problem as me, I hope it gets better for you! Today I will be reviewing Gary Paulsen’s, Woods Runner. I stumbled across this novel a couple months ago and I finally got the chance to read it. This novel was not overly exciting. I felt it was really basic compared to other books of his like, Hatchet. The story was interesting and he did add a lot of action and movement to the writing. However, I felt that it did take a minute to get into the plot. The first couple of chapters were hard to read and really didn’t fit in with the rest of the book. With all of this said, I would rate Woods Runner at 4 stars and recommend it for kids ages of 10 and up. Overall, this was a pretty relaxing and easy read. I do feel like this book was geared more toward boys, and their interests, but that is just my personal opinion. I hope you enjoy this action-filled and historical read!

Woods Runner is about a young boy named Samuel living on the outskirts of Pennsylvania in 1776. But there is one thing that people don’t understand about Samuel. He loves the forest. Samuel thrives in it and feels like himself in it. One day he comes back form hunting, and finds his whole village in smoky flames. In the distance he sees the red coats of the British army and there’s one thing he’s sure of, war has come. He sets off to find his family and comes across many different people. Sam even makes friends with a Scottish salesman named Abner. As I traveled north with Samuel to the colony of New York in search of his family, it made me wonder what life was like during a time when America was still a growing country. Will Samuel finally be reunited with his family and evade the British Red Coats? Give it up for Gary Paulsen’s, Woods Runner.

Happy reading,

Evelyn Harrier
