Once Upon a December

Romanov.

Hello! For today’s post I am reviewing the wonderful novel Romanov by Nadine Brandes. I have to admit that Romanov was such a good read that it might be my new favorite book! I have always been fascinated with the Romanoff family and their story (the Romanov's are the royal family that reigned in Russia from 1613-1918) and Romanov brought that exact tale to life. The level of creativity in this novel is outstanding and the way it captivated me as I read it was just as amazing. In Romanov, Nadine Brandes has taken the classic Anastasia story and twisted it into something breathtaking. Nadine Brandes has written other twisted tales including Fawkes and the award-winning Out of Time series. Romanov gets a solid 5 stars from me. Many other blog or review websites have very mixed reviews on this novel, but I suggest that whether or not you are into historical fiction, you should give Romanov a chance. This novel does have some violence and gore, but nothing is super graphic. If you are not a fan of that kind of stuff, it is super easy to skip over it and not miss any important bits of the story. There is also minimal romance and language so Romanov is suitable for everyone ages 13 and up. Romanov is truly an amazing novel with a great story that I hope you will get a chance to read!

Romanov follows the perspective of Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanoff, the Grand Duchess of Russia. At this point in history, the Bolsheviks have taken over Russia and the royal family is in exile. In order to save her family from their terrible fate and restore Russia to its former glory, Anastasia must smuggle ancient spells in her baggage right under the Bolsheviks noses. However, all of this changes when a confused and cold soldier named Zash stands guard at Anastasia’s door one day. After weeks and months, Anastasia is determined to let him see that the Romanov’s are good people and possibly make a friend or acquaintance out of him. Join Anastasia, her family, and Zash on this thrilling and marvelous journey through Russia while reading Romanov!

Happy reading,

Evelyn Harrier
