Time for Rehersal!

Mazie.

I don’t know about you, but my mom and I are huge musical theater junkies. I love everything about musicals; the songs, stories, costumes, the list goes on forever. So when I saw Mazie on the library shelf, you can probably guess my reaction. Mazie is a love and heartbreak story of a small town farm-girl who has big dreams for Broadway. Written by Melanie Crowder, Mazie has appeared on many book lists and is praised by Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, SLC, and many more. However, as excited as I was to read this novel, I was surprisingly disappointed. This book had the potential to be mind-blowing, but I feel like it didn’t have enough flare. Or theatrically speaking, pizzazz. The beginning was really slow and dry while the end seemed rushed. The one thing I did find very interesting about Mazie is that it takes place in the late 50’s, but it doesn’t feel like it. The way that this book is written makes it seem like present day. I would have preferred it to sound more historical because it would have related to the character and setting better. On the upside, even though stale in some spots, Mazie shows a great representation of what it is really like to be a budding Broadway star. Constant auditions and try-outs as well as lots of rejections and very few successes. All in all, I would give Mazie a solid 3 out of 5 stars. There was a lot of potential in this novel, but it just didn’t hit all of my standards. If you want to give Mazie a try, I would suggest it to readers ages 13 and up. As thin or sweet as this novel might seem, there was a surprising amount of unneeded language. I always feel that excessive amounts of swearing dilutes and dulls a good book. Overall, Mazie was a disappointment but would have been a great novel minus a few changes.

Mazie is about Mazie, only eighteen years old, who has big dreams for Broadway. Stuck in the tradition of becoming a farm-wife right out of high school limits her chances of becoming the actor she’s always wanted to be. Not only that, Mazie would have to choose between her dream or the love of her life, Jesse Schmidt. Between heart wrenching battles and life bending choices, Mazie finally finds her way on a train to New York. On her journey to the city, she wonders, was this all a mistake?

Happy reading,

Evelyn Harrier
