In or Out of the Woods?
The book I will be reviewing this week is Out of the Woods. Whenever I spotted this novel at the library I thought it was a play off of the movie Into the Woods (I will link my movie post at the bottom). And, I was right! Well, sort of. Out of the Woods is actually a sequel to the book, Into the Woods. I didn’t realize this until I reached the end of the book after the acknowledgments where it said, “Don’t forget to check out the first book, Into the Woods!” Then, everything made sense. So, even though Out of the Woods is the sequel to Into the Woods, I am still going to review it today. I would rate Out of the Woods at 3 stars. I felt that this book was entertaining but it was poorly written and just wasn’t for me. I think it was geared for younger kids at the ages 8-10 so middle grade readers may find it simple and boring. I felt that the story line kept going on and on and on and everything that the characters did was predictable. But, I do have to give it the benefit that once I started reading I couldn’t stop!
Out of the Woods reminded me of a super mash-up of all the different fairy tale stories. The book starts out with a young fisherman named Kit who catches a huge monster fish. In a small, nearby town live the Eden sisters, Aurora, Storm, and Any along with their father. The sisters' father is never home and is always off on adventures trying to find the rare Honey Dragon. Kit, the young fisherman, has fallen in love with Aurora, the eldest, and presents the sisters with the huge fish to feast on for dinner, entirely unaware of what is inside. Soon, the sisters come across a big fair parading through town, but little do they know the owner of the fair is an evil witch named Belladonna. Belladonna seeks the powerful, magic pipe that found its way into the fish and ultimately into the hands of the Eden sisters. The magic pipe quickly leads the Eden sisters into chaos as Belladonna hunts them down to retrieve the pipe. How will the Eden sisters keep the pipe away from this wicked witch, manage to survive, and pay the bills? Feel free to check this book out. It definitely wasn’t one of my favorites but if you are a younger reader and enjoy fairy tales this book is for you. Enjoy!
Happy reading,
